You hear a lot that music can help you cope with your emotions and help keep our mental health in good shape but is this true ? and if so why?
We all have that one song , one album , even one artist that we listen to when in our worst of moods , our happiest of moods or whatever other moods we may face; does listening to music actually help our emotions and change them?
Studies have shown that even sad music can help our emotions and give us pleasure and comfort. A study from Durham University in the United Kingdom focused on surveys asking what memories people have associated with listening to sad songs...the majority of experiences reported were positive!
Other research has focused on the happiness upbeat music can bring, a 2013 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who listened to upbeat music could improve their mood and boost their happiness in just two weeks!
Even with chronic conditions music is a huge factor of therapy in some situations, even changing people's lives sometimes! A review in the World Journal of Psychiatry found that music can be a positive treatment for disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, dementia, stroke, and multiple sclerosis. To no surprise they also noted that no negative side effects were reported in any of the trials, making music a low-risk treatment.
So always remember it's okay to have a good cry to some music and that is okay to dance around singing at the top of your lungs as its good for your health!
